South Korea’s Telecom Giants Show Signs of Recovery in 2026
The year 2026 is expected to be a pivotal moment for South Korea’s telecom industry, with SK Telecom and LG Uplus, two of the country’s largest telecom providers, showing signs of recovery after a tumultuous 2025. As the industry continues to evolve, these giants are taking steps to regain customer trust and strengthen their market positions.
SK Telecom Faces Challenges Amid Hacking Incident
SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest telecom provider, suffered a significant blow in 2025 after a hacking incident in April. The company’s sales and operating profit plummeted by 4.69% and 41.14%, respectively, compared to the previous year. In addition, SK Telecom lost approximately 700,000 customers to its competitors, including KT and LG Uplus. To mitigate the damage, SK Telecom implemented customer audit packages, including reduced telecommunication fees and additional data provision, which resulted in significant expenses.
“We have continued our efforts to overcome the aftermath of cyber infringement accidents and regain customer trust,” said a spokesperson for SK Telecom. “This year, we will put ‘customer value innovation’ first, strengthen our fundamental competitiveness based on basics and principles, and lay the foundation for qualitative growth by strengthening a solid profitability-oriented interior.”
LG Uplus Surpasses 15 Trillion Won in Annual Sales
In contrast, LG Uplus, the country’s third-largest telecom provider, recorded annual sales of 15.4517 trillion won and operating profit of 892.1 billion won in 2025. This marks the first time since its foundation that LG Uplus has surpassed 15 trillion won in annual sales. The company’s mobile division sales reached 6.66 trillion won, up 3.7% from the previous year, driven by increased subscription lines and improved customer satisfaction.
“We will continue to have stable earnings growth and active shareholder return policies in 2026,” said Ahn Jae-min, a researcher at NH Investment & Securities. “LG Uplus has relatively little impact from the hacking incident, and we expect the company to continue its growth trajectory.”
Implications for the Telecom Industry
The recovery of SK Telecom and LG Uplus has significant implications for the telecom industry in South Korea. As the country’s largest telecom providers continue to strengthen their market positions, smaller players may struggle to compete. The exemption of penalty fees from SK Telecom and KT in July and December last year, respectively, also had a significant impact on the industry, with LG Uplus partially benefiting from the situation.
The telecom industry in South Korea is expected to continue evolving in 2026, with a focus on 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. As the industry continues to adapt to changing customer needs and technological advancements, players will need to prioritize innovation and customer value to remain competitive.
As the telecom giants in South Korea continue to show signs of recovery, the question remains: can they sustain their growth in the face of increasing competition and technological disruption? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – 2026 will be a pivotal year for South Korea’s telecom industry.
